Imposter Syndrome and A Review of The 2025 Job Market
There are two parts to this newsletter. First, a much-needed scan of the job market. As we approach the holiday season, we need to understand how to be strategic in the months ahead if our goal is to secure a role this side of Christmas. Second, a practical reset built from Alisonās evidence-led playbook, adapted for professionals who need results fast.
The macro noise job seekers cannot ignore
First, let's review the market signals that have tilted job search from difficult to dizzying. Then letās look at a practical reset built from Alisonās evidence-led playbook, adapted for senior professionals who need results fast.
Across sectors, companies continue to reduce costs, streamline their structures, and reallocate capital. I donāt feel I need to provide references to this fact: We have had hundreds of thousands of announced job cuts since 2024, and we now know that the year-to-date tally is reminiscent of the Global Financial Crisis era. That pressure has particularly affected technology, finance, and consulting, with measurable psychological fallout on professionals transitioning between roles.
Layoffs make headlines for a reason. When ExxonMobil consolidates corporate functions, Nike tunes a complex operating model, or major software vendors quietly trim teams, the narrative that senior office roles are insulated no longer holds. The message to professionals, based on what we have seen happen in the past 12 months, is this: You will need to articulate your value in a way that withstands a tighter internal business case on the employer side.
Return-to-office mandates are another issue job seekers need to navigate. Several large employers have tightened flexibility policies in 2025. The paradox is that surveys show many employees would consider trading flexibility for higher pay, which tells me the real negotiation this year is about economics, not nostalgia for water coolers. The workers most open to returning to full-time office work expect a premium of roughly ten percent or more.
The policy backdrop matters too. In the United States, even the threat of government budget instability adds anxiety about the cadence of hiring and federal contracting. The week a shutdown drags on, agencies and vendors pause, and candidates feel the chill in their inboxes. It is not your imagination. Those are genuine time delays in the job market, introduced by policy risk.
Meanwhile, the AI wave is also affecting jobs and the recruitment process. HR tech stacks that score resumes or surface ranked shortlists are intersecting with new laws, especially in Europe under the EU AI Act, which treats many employment-related AI tools as high risk and requires documentation, transparency, and human oversight. Employers that get this wrong face fines and reputational risk. For candidates, that means two things. First, more structured applications with evidence of skills will help you stand out in systems designed to show auditors why you were selected. Second, more human checkpoints will be introduced into the hiring process, rewarding candidates who can specifically discuss business outcomes rather than titles.
And what about ghost jobs! Add one more layer of noise that candidates feel viscerally. This is a topic we addressed exactly one year ago on The Job Hunting Podcast, coincidentally, to coincide with last year's Halloween celebrations. There's now enough evidence proving what job seekers have suspected for years. A nontrivial share of job postings are stale or strategic intelligence gathering, rather than real job ads. Legislators and regulators have taken note and are exploring potential remedies. As a candidate, your response should be pragmatic, thoroughly reviewing the job opportunity before making significant customizations, and prioritizing roles where you have a warm sponsor.
When I look past the noise, hiring still happens. LinkedInās monthly workforce report shows that hiring persists in pockets and waves. As a job seeker, your task is to triangulate where your evidence lines up with those pockets, not to chase every headline. Inside this market, what sabotages credible candidates is not the absence of merit. It is the way imposter dynamics narrow their field of action at the worst possible moment.

Conquering imposter syndrome
Imposter syndrome often intensifies at transition points that are common in modern careers. Layoffs, restructures, lateral moves, promotions, cross-functional transfers, and starting a new role all act as triggers because they introduce uncertainty and visibility. Even when a new role is wanted and earned, the early months can produce a delayed wave of doubt as you move from known expert to a new environment.
Imposter Syndrome expert Alison Shamir created a framework with three pillars that I find extremely actionable: identify, intercept, and redirect. Each pillar includes specific steps that move you from reactive spiraling to responsive performance. Here is how I interpret these pillars for senior professionals and executives.
- Identify the trigger: Map the specific situations that provoke your imposter story. Common triggers include presenting to new stakeholders, stepping into a role with an unfamiliar scope, or navigating hiring processes where timelines and decisions are opaque. Naming the trigger is powerful because it clarifies context and reduces the psychic load of ambiguity.
- Intercept the story: When the I donāt belong narrative flares, run an intercept. Ask what changed in the environment, and what is the most objective evidence I have of my prior competence here. Then state a replacement script tied to facts. For example, Iām in this conversation because I led X, achieved Y, and learned Z. This moves you from identity attack to evidence recall and stabilizes your emotional state.
- Redirect the behavior: Choose a micro action that counters the sabotaging impulse. If perfectionism is making you over-polish, set a time box and ship. If rumination is keeping you in your head, book a rehearsal with a peer. If comparison is spiking anxiety, block social media until after the presentation. The aim is to convert reactive energy into responsive execution so that you can present and perform at your best in the moment that counts.
Alisonās point is that control is the goal. You will not be able to control every variable in a business environment, but you can master the controllables that shape your professional presence. She has seen professionals shrink multi-week spirals into minutes or hours by practicing identify, intercept, redirect until it becomes a cognitive reflex. That shift often spells the difference between missing an opportunity and meeting the moment.

Overcome imposter syndrome in your job search:
Weekly plan:
- Monday: Open a fresh one-pager called Week Plan. Top third: three outcomes that matter for your search or role. Middle: people to contact with exact asks. Bottom: one stretch action that makes you slightly nervous.
- Midweek: Run one identify, intercept, redirect cycle on a real trigger. Write the intercept script verbatim. Example: I am here because I led X, delivered Y, learned Z. Then take one step that ships value.
- Friday: Maintain your evidence ledger. Three lines only. Decide on the single story you will lead with next week in an interview, town hall, or stakeholder update.
Interview and promotion language bank - Use these prompts to translate your stories into impactful statements:
- When the mandate was ambiguous, I clarified the success criteria with A and B, and then delivered the X result in Y weeks.
- The constraint was time. I redesigned the process to remove Z steps, which reduced cycle time by N percent.
- The risk profile changed. I paused the launch, convened legal and security for a 48-hour review, and shipped a compliant version with no slip in the external date.
Signals you are on track:
- You default to evidence when asked about outcomes.
- Your reset time after a wobble is shorter.
- Your weekly plan consistently includes one stretch action.
- Your conversations shift from general interest to specific scope and measurable value.
- Your calendar shows more live processes and fewer dangling maybes.

Time out
- I'm travelling to Sydney today to record an episode of the Australian TV show Insight (on SBS). Insight is a discussion forum on taboo topics. We will be discussing jealousy, and I'm there to provide a career perspective. I'm not sure when it will air, but if you'd like to follow me as I travel to Sydney and behind the scenes of the shooting day tomorrow, check my Instagram Stories.
- I'm watching High Potential and I'm loving it. Just the easy watch I need before going to bed. Like Better Things, nothing makes me happier than a badass mom in L.A.
- I'm really enjoying listening to Mid Spiral, the 2024 album by BadBadNotGood, a Canadian instrumental band. It's a mix of jazz, hip-hop, and a bit of bossa. They have collaborated with some of my favourite musicians, including Baby Rose (my absolute favourite voice of the century) and many big names like Tyler, the Creator, and Kendrick Lamar. Excellent background music when you're doing those admin tasks like cleaning your inbox, or packing up your suitcase :)
